MCM Birmingham Comic Con November 2018

It feels like a million years since we were at MCM Birmingham Comic Con last November.  I don’t know if that’s because I’ve been so lazy with the blog or if time has really flown by.

Now, if you’ve been reading our previous blog posts, you’ll have a pretty good idea how I feel about the Birmingham NEC.  It’s not my favourite place in the world, that’s for sure.  Not just the fact that it’s over 3 hours away which is a boring long ass drive but the place itself is so huge you can easily get lost and if you’re lucky, make it back out within the next 5 years.  But hey-ho, the show must go on and it was time to nut up or shut up.

As always, I hated leaving my little furball.

His little face though ;_;

As far as I can remember (my memory gets worse with age), it was a pretty straightforward journey.  We got there a little later than intended but then that’s the awesome motorway for you!  Just a little note to self, next time I have to drive to Birmingham, I will NOT be going via the M25 ever again!

Anyway, once there, we got set up in good time and then left as soon as possible to get to our hotel.  See, this is another thing I dislike about the NEC, you can’t choose any of the hotels within walking distance because they are so ridiculously expensive, so this is the only show we do where we have to drive at least 15 minutes to our hotel.  And I really loathe driving in Birmingham!

Thank god for sat nav though as I honestly wouldn’t have been able to find our hotel without it.  We were staying at a no frills Holiday Inn Express, however, they had a rather posh restaurant attached to it making it very popular and very crowded! We literally had to fight our way to the bar to pick up some drinks and made the sensible decision of taking them back to our room.

Bret seems happy enough with it!

The artwork was quite fascinating! LOL!

Rather than eat in the over-priced restaurant (yep, Bret and I are turning into right scrooges) we decided to get pizza delivered instead.  Good choice! And can I just say that the new (well it was then) cheeseburger pizza is the dog’s bollocks!

The next morning, we skipped breakfast and opted for an extra 30 minutes shut eye before having to get up, get ready and leave for the NEC.

Now where’s the photo of us all set up you might wonder? Well, yep, there isn’t one! Bret left me to get everything ready while he made an urgent bathroom dash.  I pulled the covers off our table and took the earring stand with it, sending it spinning out of control and spewing all the earrings everywhere.  So then it was a mad panic to tidy everything up and set up the earring stand from scratch.  I was not pleased. I was very stressed. I was an idiot.  Hence why there is no photo of our table.

Thankfully, we got lucky with our neighbours again! A great husband and wife team called Maz and Baz – proper Londoners with a billion stories to share, they were a laugh a minute.  They had 2 separate tables in the hall so we had Baz next to us for the weekend and he was an absolute riot.

I can promise you that they were the ONLY pointless selfies we took the ENTIRE weekend.

The day was a mish mash of being really really busy and then really really quiet.  I didn’t get a chance to look around though because Bret decided to leave me for most of the day (as usual).  I couldn’t complain though, I’d had a pretty good day and was looking forward to ordering another cheeseburger pizza.

Before we left for the hotel, Bret wanted his usual photo at the MCM sign.

Bret and the MCM Sign. YAY!

Back at the hotel we settled in for the night with our pizza, looking forward to being in our own beds tomorrow.

I guess I don’t need to mention that we skipped breakfast.  Actually we slept in a bit too late and it was a rush to get packed up and check out of the hotel.  If that wasn’t bad enough, I managed to take a wrong turn somewhere and ended up driving in the opposite direction of the NEC.  Brilliant Candy, just brilliant!  By the time we got to the hall, they were already letting in the early birds.  However, when we arrived at our table, Baz had already set up for us! How freaking awesome was that?

Now I can’t remember how busy we were but I literally took one photo ALL day and that was pretty much first thing in the morning.  To be fair though, the photo was awesome enough to be worthy of being the only photo.

Loki!!!!!! <3

That is the BEST Loki cosplay I have ever seen! The dude totally nailed it.

So yes, we’d had a great weekend but it was also a relief to be heading home.  Also, I’d just like to say that I’m a total accent sponge, I can’t help it.  Sometimes I worry that people may think I’m taking the piss but that really isn’t the case at all, it just happens.  So by the time I was driving home, I was talking like a total Cockney! LOL!! I don’t know what was worse really, the entire 4 hour (yes we got caught in traffic) journey with Bret having to listen to my faux London accent or Bret putting Gary Numan’s “My Name Is Ruin” on repeat.  Actually, I LOVE that song so I guess Bret wins.

As always, I want to thank all of our customers that weekend, I feel so blessed that you really are an amazing bunch of lovely people.  I genuinely love meeting all of you, you make it all worthwhile.  Our next MCM will be in London in May and we look forward to seeing you all there.
